Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) is an integral part of our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme. It supports children through their physical, social, emotional and moral development and will help pupils learn to respect themselves and others and move with confidence from childhood through adolescence into adulthood. It is about the understanding of the importance of stable and loving relationships, family life, respect, love and care. It is also about the teaching of sex, sexuality and sexual health.
Values Statement
Sex and Relationship Education in our school will reflect the values of the PSHE programme and will be taught in the context of relationships. SRE will promote children’s self-esteem and emotional well-being, and help them to form and maintain worthwhile and satisfying relationships, based on respect for themselves and for others at home, school, work and in the community
The SRE is enhanced by a supportive school ethos where all are valued and encouraged and positive relationships are seen as important, and there is a safe and secure school environment which is conducive to learning. It builds on the values outlined in the latest version of the National Curriculum and PSHE Guidance.
Our policy is currently being updated in line with recent guidance published by the Department for Education which becomes statutory from September 2020. Also from September 2020, it will be compulsory for all schools to teach Health Education.
