Learning at home

This page is designed to show parents how we teach English and Maths to our pupils. Using these methods will mean that children are being taught the same thing at home and at school.

Long multiplication by Year 6 - 30/09/16

A video by Year 6 at Horncastle Primary School, made on 9th February 2017, that explains what complex sentences are and how to use them. The following are discussed: relative clauses, subordinate clauses, embedded clauses and adverbial phrases.

On Thursday 26th November 2015, Mr Thomas ran a workshop for parents to discuss SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) expectations and taught terminology across Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6) at our school. Hand-outs and information from the workshop are available below.

Lower Key Stage 2 SPAG workshop - 26/11/15

On Thursday 26th November 2015, Mr Hyde and Mr Mistry ran a workshop for parents to discuss SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) expectations and taught terminology across Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) at our school. They discussed the different terminologies used at each year group, when we expect children to be proficient enough at using different grammar to be assessed on them and how to use different punctuation. Hand-outs and information from the workshop are available below.

Handwriting workshop - 24/11/15

On Tuesday 24th November 2015, Mr Mistry ran a workshop for parents to show our new handwriting scheme. He demonstrated the cursive way to write each lower-case letter, a chart to show how to write letters using the scheme (both upper- and lower-case), how to sit / grip a pencil for best quality handwriting and answered questions from parents in attendance. Hand-outs and information from the workshop are available below.

Phonics Tutorials For Parents

We use the Jolly Phonics scheme at school - below are some videos that will help supplement the work being done at school.

Jolly Phonics Phase Two

Jolly Phonics is a program designed to help children learn the name and sounds of letters. This video shows all the Jolly Phonic songs from Phase Two, which consists all the letter sounds from A-Z apart from Q as it is a tricky sound and is part of Phase Three as 'qu'.
